Sustainability is becoming increasingly important for the present and the future. We also notice this at Hellema, which is why we are constantly working to improve the sustainability of raw materials, transportation and packaging.
Sustainable raw materials
At Hellema, we believe it is important to continue to make our production more sustainable. The demand for sustainable raw materials is also increasing.
Palm oil is widely used throughout the world. We use RSPO-certified palm oil for our products. The Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) is committed to transforming markets, with sustainable palm oil as the standard and the ultimate goal.
The rainforest alliance is a quality mark used for various raw materials, such as the chocolate and hazelnuts used by Hellema. The rainforest alliance is committed to the protection of the rainforest and a better future for people and our planet.
Packaging
At Hellema, we use cardboard packaging wherever possible. We use FSC-certified cardboard to minimise our impact on deforestation. We also work with a cardboard ‘tray’ to package our biscuits.
When it comes to sustainable packaging, reducing plastic plays a major role. To reduce the number of plastic wrappers, Hellema has developed a unique paper wrapper. We’re very proud of this, as we’re the only company in the Netherlands using it.
Solar panels
Hellema also includes its factory when going greener! We’ve placed 740 solar panels on the roof of our factory in Hallum, which enables us to save over 121,000 kg of CO2 per year. This compensates for the work of 60 trees annually! We also generate energy enough for around 68 households each year.
